Ah Beauty's. Not so good anymore, I am told.

I'll have to put in more on breakfast fare.

When I first moved to the States, I would ask
for products that only existed in Canada.
Some were best known by their brand names,
but asking for J-Cloths (like Handi-Wipes)
got me puzzled looks.

Most noticible in Canada: ESSO gas stations.

Hi Susan,

I have expanded my "eating out" section. Chinatown is near.
We liked the Ruby Rouge, where we had dim sum when the line
was too long at Kam Fung. For info, see:

1. I was only vaguely aware of the conference
2. I did not know there were proceedings
3. I do not know where to find the proceedings
4. I would need to coax the proceedings in hcibib format

I found http://www.nordichi.org/, so I see that the proceedings
for 2002 and 2004 are in the acm dl, but I could not find them
in the acm dl. So, #3 is the problem. #4 could still be a problem,
but it's unusual for online proceedings to be impossible to parse.

Hi Elizabeth,

I remember you. You CSE picture looks great! Me, what's left of my hair is grey,
and I've taken to British spelling since we moved back to Montreal.

Here are some possible emails for the elusive Dr. Boyd:
	jaboydjr@netwalk.com
	info@protologos.net
	jaboydjr@protologos.com
He is the principal at this website:
	http://protologos.com/
and there is some contact info there:
	http://protologos.com/contact.html

If you need help, I can probably find Srinivas Raghavan, Ed Swan,
and Scott Grissom.

Yes, I think the conference pages should point to the proceedings.

The 2000 proceedings are apparently for sale
	http://www.stimdi.se/arrangemang/konf/nordichi2000/proceed.html
but even if not, the paper titles and abstracts can serve an archival
purpose, and possibly generate some contacts to the authors.

If you have the 2000 CD, perhaps I could borrow a copy to get
the info, or you could send me the paper titles, authors, and abstracts,
along with keywords and session names, if available, and page numbers,
if they have meaning on a CD. Authors could send me the URL of their
papers that are mounted on servers (and even if they do not, the
title and google are enough to find the full papers if they exist).

Hi,

I think there are two lists you might post to:
	chi-jobs@acm.org
	chi-students@acm.org
and maybe
	chi-educators@acm.org
This page will get you to list descriptions:
	http://sigchi.org/listserv/

More geographically focused:
	http://www.baychi.org/
and even more:
	http://www.baychi.org/jobbank/

Hope that helps.

I was curious to know if you have any resources available or contacts which I might be able to use to help a young person out of college find a great job with a reputable company such as Panasonic. The position is here in San Jose, so candidates being based in the Bay Area is a plus. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I'll add the job description below so you can get a better idea of what kind of person I'm looking for. Thanks very much for your time, I really appreciate it.

Hi Ed,

I saw that you moved to Mississippi. What brought on that move,
and more importantly, are you happy where you are? I looked over
your department and I thought it looked like a pretty good set
of interests for you.

As for me, Caroline was interested in finding more colleagues
and looked around for a couple of years. Of all places to end up,
she found a good position at McGill, about two blocks away from
my mother's apartment. Around that time, my mother's health gave
out and she died on what would have been my father's 75th birthday.
I have kept my position at OCLC and telecommute. Almost no travel
and not much on the phone, just a lot of email. I do a lot of the
same sort of work, with more time than I can sometimes believe
on specialty topics like accessibility and multilingual systems.
My French has improved, but I really do not get a lot of chances
to speak it.

Our son Mark, now 12 and in high school, which starts with 7th grade,
has done well, but he was too old at 9 to go into French immersion
and had has a tutor to catch up with his classmates in French.
George, now 9, is pretty fluent, having gone from kindergarten in
Ohio to 100% French immersion in first grade. It's pretty nice
to be back in Montreal with family and friends, and it's nice for
the kids to be in a more cosmopolitan city.

Right after we moved here, I got involved in my 30-year high school
reunion, so when people asked "Are you still in touch with friends
of your youth?" I had to answer that I was in touch with all of them.
I became the reunion webmaster and we cut a CD with about 3000 pictures
and scans dating back to nursery school class photos to video from
the reunion itself. Never in my life have I been thanked so profusely
for my bit twiddling, and it got me started in a range of nostalgic
activities, scanning in the past 100 years of my family.

I was thanked by SIGCHI for the HCI Bibliography (now with 34,000 bibs)
and was given a lifetime service award, which I deferred until CHI 2006,
which will be in Montreal next month. Last year's Usability Professional's
Association conference was in Montreal during the Jazz Festival, so that
was fun. For CHI'2006, I wrote an quirky insider's visitor's guide:
	http://acm.org/perlman/guide.html

Since Lucent's problems, I think John Boyd's career has meandered.
Every year or two, I check protologos.com to see if he has struck it big.
I have some contact with Srinivas Raghavan every couple of years,
and last I heard, he was studying driver distraction for Qualcomm.

If you make it up to Montreal, look me up! We have several guest rooms.

Gary

Hi again, Ed,

It sounds like you made a good moce to MSU. Although we are in Montreal,
we live close to downtown, and Caroline walks to and from McGill most days.
And with me working at home two blocks from one school and a 10 minute
walk to the other, we enjoy some of the benefits of small town life.

I AM pleased you are doing empirical work, and one of the pleasures of
teaching that material was the knowledge that it would -- if conveyed --
last a lifetime, and apply beyond research. I think visualization and
especially virtual reality are ripe for empirical work, so good for you.

I remember how well you could counterbalance experimental designs.
Have you tried sudoku? It's a popular type of puzzle in newspapers,
but it's bascially counterbalancing latin squares. My kids like it.

|STAT has gained popularity because of today's unixes: linux and Mac OS X.
All the programs are turning 25, so they are older than some of their users.
I don't use many of the programs these days, not because I don't do any
empirical work, but because I can analyse thousands or millions of transactions,
so standard errors are tiny. Still, I get a kick of meeting grad students who
gawk at the father of dm and anova.

I remember seeing a picture of your daughter in 2000, but did not know
you had another. Alex is ambiguous, so congratulations on him/her
to you and Courtney. With two boys, I've wondered what it would be
like to have a girl, but I think that will be a thought experiment for me.

I don't recall reading your mail below. It must have been eaten by
a spam filter, or just deleted from the hundred a day I get at this
address. Sorry! I would have responded if I had read it.

Yawn! Getting late and we're painting tomorrow. Sleep.

Keep in touch,

Gary

I thought it would be interesting if a group of people reviewed the same HCI materials.

As a first set of materials, in unofficial acknowledgment of his receiving the
2006 Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science:

I propose that people share reviews of the (HCI) books by (only) Don Norman.

Dear Prof. Stephanidis,

I am working on adding the bibliographic data of UAIS volume 4
to the HCI Bibliography (www.hcibib.org) and I wanted to comment
on the accessibility of the online presentation. An example is this
article from Vol. 4, No. 2, p. 85
	http://www.springerlink.com/link.asp?id=v4w40x516328llvj
The first sentence of the abstract reads, to a sighted person, like this:

This paper presents a study investigating how the performance of motion-impaired computer users in "point and click" tasks varies with target distance (A), target width (W), and force-feedback gravity well width (GWW).

To a screen reader, the double quotes, which for reasons I do not know,
are displayed with images with alt text set to the SGML character names
"ldquo" (left double quote) and "rdquo" (right double quote).

This paper presents a study investigating how the performance of motion-impaired computer users in ldquo point and click rdquo tasks varies with target distance (A), target width (W), and force-feedback gravity well width (GWW).

The display of the abstract can not be resized without turning off stylesheets.

I suggest that you ask Springer why they use images for punctuation,
and if they feel they must, perhaps request that they use better alt text,
such as " or '.

Best wishes,

Gary Perlman, Director, HCI Bibliography Project

Hi Howard,

I'd be happy to get together for lunch sometime soon.
Le Commensal would be great. I also like a place on Stanley
near Sherbrooke for Indian. Le taj, I think.

My Montreal guide is not enough? Not even with a promise
to hand out Thrills gum?

I've been in touch with some people working on promoting CHI.

Susan Wilkinson <swilkinson@attendancemarketing.com>
George Andreopoulos <gandreopoulos@attendancemarketing.com>

I think you should definitely contact them.

Hi Howard,

Thanks again for lunch.

I looked around and I can't find my files for the Help topic we discussed.
I'm a little reluctant to commit to a talk when I can't find the paper
or even the data on which it is based. And maybe the message "Your work
is used so little that you can add lots of bells and whistles and no one
needs top worry about performance" would not be a popular one, although
the parts on making Help more used might. Still, I would like to find
the work. It must have been lost in a move from computer to computer,
so I needs to look through some CDs.

I could talk about universal usability and design for change.
I've done a lot of multilingual work (Chinese, Japanese, Korean,
and most recently Arabic) since this 2002 paper:
	http://www.acm.org/~perlman/design4change.pdf
and for the STC crowd, it is based on 1986 work presented to SIGDOC on
"single-sourcing" user interfaces and documentation:
	http://www.acm.org/~perlman/multi.html
