This is being provided by the BayCHI chapter for all local
chapters,
and you can pick up your ribbon at the Local SIGs booth.

Please let me know if you will be at CHI 98 so I can

I will be there, and I'd love to meet you and others from BuckCHI.
Maybe we could do a meal sometime that week. I haven't had a chance to
come to Columbus yet, unfortunately, and I'd like to attach some faces
to names.

I'll be in the "Structured Observation" and "The Art of the Interface"
tutorials, as well.

Hi Gary!

All registration goes through our childcare facilitators, Kiddiecorp.
They can be reached at chikids@kiddiecorp.com, though I've forwarded
your enrollment information to them. Any registration or pricing
questions should go to them.

To answer your other questions, CHIkids runs Sunday through Thursday of
CHI from about 8:30AM to 5:30PM. You can sign Mark up by the day, if
you'd like to plan some other activities for him. We do have a field
trip to a local science museum scheduled for Monday afternoon, but it's
really only for the older kids. If you have any other questions about
the technology program, please let me know.

We look forward to seeing Mark in LA!

CHI CHIkids Information
____________________________________________________________________
In association with the ACM SIGCHI, KiddieCorp is pleased to offer an
exciting new concept in convention child care. For children of ages from 6
months to 13 years old, the CHIkids/KiddieCorp program is intended to offer
activities that are fun and entertaining yet challenging and educational.

The younger children will experience KiddieCorp's developmentally
appropriate, creative activities consisting of safe, fun-filled games,
toys, and arts & crafts projects. The older ones will be exposed to the
CHIkids Technology Center that includes multimedia story telling, CD-ROM
field trips, the CHIkids newsroom, and technology workouts (for a more
detailed description and registration information see the CHIkids
Technology Center Registration attached to this form). The middle age
groups will have the opportunity to experience both programs.

KiddieCorp is in their twelfth year of providing high quality services to
conventions across the country. This will be their fifth year with the CHI
conference, and their third year collaborating on the CHIkids program. The
KiddieCorp team are bonded, qualified child care specialists who are
carefully selected and trained. In the CHIkids Technology Center
the KiddieCorp counselors work with CHI volunteers, and it will be this
team that will lead the children through an amazing range of advanced
computer activities.

The child care program will be located at the Los Angeles Convention Center
in room 502.
The deadline for CHIkids registration is March 27, 19.
DUE TO THE PROGRAM'S POPULARITY THERE WILL BE NO ON-SITE REGISTRATION.
For parents with infants please bring diaper changing supplies,
formula/baby food, and a change of clothes. Please label all lunches and
personal belongings. KiddieCorp provides snacks and beverages. Lunches and
a t-shirt are included in the cost for children three and over. KiddieCorp
staff does not administer medication. To ensure a safe and fun-filled
environment, any child that is ill will not be admitted to the child care.

CHIkids Technology Center Activities
________________________________________________________________________
CHIkids challenges the traditional notion of child care and rolls summer
camp, technology, and CHI into one exciting new experience for children.
This is an opportunity for the next generation to explore computers,
technology and user interface design at the CHI conference. Four areas of
exploration will be created especially for children (3-13 years
of age). They will have the opportunity to create multimedia stories, try
the latest educational multimedia titles, test emerging software
technologies with CHI researchers, and to be conference reporters using
desktop publishing tools and the World Wide Web:

CD-ROM Field Trips
Would you like your children to go on a trip that takes them under the
ocean, inside a rain forest, across the world, or even out into space? In
this activity area children will use CD-ROMs as a way to learn about
geography, history or science in an engaging and exciting way. For
example, children can become "oceanographers", doing the things real
oceanographers do. Or they may be master "sleuths", traveling the world
to solve mysteries, learning geography and problem solving as they go. Part
of each activity will be exploring these simulated worlds, while other
parts will allow them to create multimedia presentations about their
experiences, which may be published in the CHIkids Newsletter.

CHIkids Newsroom
Using current computer-based publishing tools, CHIkids will publish daily
news about the CHI conference. Children will research and report on what
is happening at the CHI conference's tutorials, panels, paper discussions,
or upcoming events. They may also review and write about various software
products that they use during their CHIkids experience. CHIkids reporters
will write, illustrate, and photograph news as they
see it for their stories to be produced in print and electronic form. Both
the printed and WWW versions will be distributed to the CHI community
during the CHI conference. (For an example of the CHI 97 CHIkids
Newsletter see: http://www.acm.org/sigchi/chi97/chikids/

Multimedia Storytelling
This area will offer children the chance to become multimedia storytellers.
They will be given opportunities to draw, animate, create sounds, write
content, and use digital photographs, all to develop their own interactive
multimedia project. Children will come to understand what multimedia is,
how it is developed by today's professionals, and what
tools are available for children to use. Depending on the children's
interests they may also be exposed to a range of authoring tools, scripting
languages and debugging strategies. Children will come away from their
multimedia storytelling experience with a finished multimedia project.

Technology Workouts
In this activity area children will examine the ways new technologies are
tested for usability. Researchers from the CHI community will bring
prototype and beta software for children to use. Together they will
develop a usability test plan and execute it in a focus group situation.
Older children will come to understand what it means to test software and
younger children will have fun playing with new technology experiences not
yet available commercially. Researchers will receive valuable feedback from
children on their work.

I don't have a kid to bring along but I thought you might appreciate an
update on "the most exhausting place on earth." I recently took my two
nephews, 3 & 6, to Disneyland. It's overwhelming, tiring, and the food is
awful, but still, loads of fun. I suggest tailoring the day by reading
the schedule of parades and shows before moving too far into the park.
That way, you may be able to plan to be in an area when a parade passes
through and use that as "down time," if not for your son, for yourself.
It's kind of nice to alternate the walking and rides with a show or parade
(a sit down activity).

I made the mistake of asking the kids what they wanted to do. Next time I
would pre-select more manageable choices and give them limited options.
I'm not a parent, only an aunt, and I think by giving them free reign I
contributed to their exhaustion, and my own. The park is huge and there is
a lot of walking in addition to the excitement. I didn't remember the
walking from my last trip (18 years earlier). A stroller might not be a
bad idea, although getting a four year old into one might not be easy.

have fun.

Gary,

I'm a former Disneyland Cast Member (employee) from long ago, and have
become acquainted with several Disney fanatics and Imagineers over the
years, especially through the internet newsgroups (alt.disney.disneyland
in particular). Even though I have lived in San Francisco for the past
six years, I'm an Annual Passholder to Disneyland, and go at least once
a month.

I would highly recommend visiting the website of a friend of mine (Al
Lutz), who actually takes more hits each month that Disney's own
pathetic website for Disneyland (www.disney.com/disneyland).

His URL is: http://members.aol.com/alweho/docs/contents.htm. Al will
often have more up-to-date information on his website (The D-I-G, or
Disneyland Information Guide) than Disney will on theirs; it's
definitely worth the time.

Hope this helps!

CHIkids98 unofficial field trip to Disneyland

(This is just me, a CHI parent, planning.)

Mark Perlman is 4 (and a HALF!) years old
and will be going to CHIkids98 in LA.
Mark likes a variety of interactive software,
and I've set up a web page for him at:
        http://www.acm.org/~perlman/family.html
Mark has an interest in meeting Winnie the Pooh
and in other activities at Disneyland.
I was planning on spending Sunday April 19th
at Disneyland, starting in the morning
and continuing until the inevitable meltdown,
and perhaps well after.

Mark is a nice ordinary pre-schooler,
and does well with boys and girls from 3-6.
Are any other CHI parents in the same boat
and interested in making a day of it?
I can boast being to Disneyland 10+ times
15-20 years ago, meaning I can lead people
to things that may no longer exist. :-?

Of course, we parents can talk about
kid-computer interaction during the five
minutes of quiet time I'm planning for. :-)

If there is a lot of interest,
I'll set up a mailing list or a web page.
I'd prefer to have a small group that
is flexible but am willing to help
other small groups organize themselves,
say for other aged kids.

I updated you all on a portion of the above abit earlier this month. Here
is more.

The 1-hour break between conference sessions on Wednesday morning 22 April
will highlight Local SIGs and the CHI conference posters. Special tables
will be set up for our use during this hour, complete with foam board signs
to identify the Local SIGs represented at the tables. (I have been told
that this can all be set up near the Local SIGs booth, which I think would
be ideal, though the layout of the Commons area has not be finalized.) I
encourage you to take advantage of this additional opportunity to advertise
your chartered or prospective Local SIG. Please have volunteers -- the
more, the better -- at the tables during this hour. Invite your Local SIG
members to be in the area so they can also interact with other conference
attendees who are interested in learning about your Local SIG. Bring
sign-up sheets; bring membership forms; bring materials advertising your
Local SIG (handouts, t-shirts, ...); ...

This highlight of Local SIGs (and the posters) will be advertised in the
CHI conference program, and food will be provided in the area to help
entice attendance.

A reminder that you can display the materials advertising your Local SIG in
the Local SIGs booth throughout the conference. We are hoping to have
things akin to "magazine stands" in the booth in which you can place
handouts; my thanks to LA-CHI, which is seeing whether it can find such
stands for our use. At the minimum, there will be tables in the booth on
which your materials can be displayed.

More soon, but let me know if you have any questions.

Richard

CHI 98 will feature an ACM/SIGCHI Volunteers Reception the evening of
Wednesday 22 April immediately following the SIGCHI Business Meeting.

You and those of your colleagues who have volunteered time and effort
towards the development or operation of your chartered or prospective local
sig are among the volunteers this reception is recognizing. (The wording
in the CHI 98 advance program about this reception might not suggest to you
that this is true, but I confirmed this at the SIGCHI Executive Committee
meeting this past December.)

So, please attend, and please extend this invitation to your fellow local
sig volunteers.

Richard

Wow -- that 90% certainty figure has been unexpectedly unstable, with a
plummet into single digits at one very recent point. My thanks
particularly to Arnie Lund, co-chair of CHI 98 who is also getting plans
together for a Rocky Mountain CHI, for his role in enabling me to finally
point you to the working meeting CFP. It is now accessible from the Local
SIGs webpage (http://www.acm.org/sigchi/local-sigs/); please take a look as
soon as you can.

I look forward to this second opportunity to work with many of you
face-to-face. (A few words about our first workshop at CHI 97 appear in
the October 97 SIGCHI Bulletin Local SIGs column.)

If you are interested in attending, let me know.
Otherwise, I and Lorraine will represent BuckCHI.

Hi Gary,

The records at the conference office show that you have reservations at
the Westin arriving
4/18 and departing 4/23; there is a note that you will be accompanied by
a 4 yr old.

If yu have not received a confirmation from the Westin by the end of
next week, March 27th, then call the hotel directly to get your
confirmation number.
213-624-1000

Thanks,

Paul

We are leaving on the 24th, not the 23rd.

What do I do when I get confirmation of the wrong reservation?

This is not rocket science. I'd expect confirmation within a week,
not no confirmation of the wrong reservation after a month.

Hi,

Back in October, Robert Burns (Puget Sound SIGCHI Chair) wrote to this
mailing list:

I'm the current chair of Puget Sound SIGCHI. My chapter is
just now starting work on a brochure that we can hand out
at the annual CHI conference, our monthly meetings or to
anyone wanting to know about how we function as a subset
   of SIGCHI.

When Puget Sound SIGCHI finally creates its brochure, I will
send a note announcing it here and let whoever wants one
send me email with their request and mailing address. This
might be a good time for other chapters to consider creating
their own brochure, if they don't have one already.

Have you all created brochures or some other form of handout about your
Local SIG efforts for dissemination at the CHI 98 Local SIGs booth? I
encourage you to do so, even if the product is a one-page photocopy.

Many people attend the CHI conference who don't know about your Local SIG
even though they are from the area you serve. I suggest that you consider
them to be your primary target audience and provide to them the info that
will convince them to check you out -- e.g., info about your purpose, about
the benefits of being associated with your Local SIG, about your
activities/services/opportunities, ... And acknowledge those who make it
all possible (i.e., your volunteers and sponsors).

As Robert's words above suggest, you can ask him for a copy of the brochure
that the Puget Sound chapter developed <Robert.Burns3@PSS.BOEING.COM>.
Also, a copy of the GB/SIGCHI brochure can be downloaded from the GB/SIGCHI
website. And various chapter webpages provide additional ideas about what
to include.

The exhibit hall will be open much of the Tuesday (10-6), Wednesday
(8:30-6), and Thursday (8:30-4) of the conference, and don't forget to be
there with your colleagues mid-morning of Wednesday during the highlight on
Local SIGs (great opportunity to chat with interested folks, sell t-shirts,
signup new members, ...).

Richard Anderson
Local SIGs Chair

I received two identical confirmations, both for two people for
five instead of six nights. I called them and their online
system has me down for a SINGLE for five nights, followed by
a SECOND reservation for an additional five nights. So the
records at the conferance office only had a surface similarity
to what the hotel got into their system.

In my case, I sent a corrected reservation, which got misinterpreted
by the conference office and then again by the hotel. So it goes.

I'm all set, but have some reservations (ha!) about what will happen
when I get there.

An application for:
	"'Making the Impossible Possible'
in or via a Local Chapter of ACM SIGCHI"

The BuckCHI Chapter would like to participate in the meeting
but would like to provide a "two for one" option by having
Lorraine Normore represent the Chapter in the morning and
Gary Perlman represent the Chapter in the afternoon.

Gary is the current Chapter Chair.

6565 Frantz Road
Dublin, Ohio 43017-3395
normorel@oclc.org

Lorraine is an ex-officio member of the Executive Council
and was active in the Steering Body that formed the chapter.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
What we are trying to achieve:

(1) provide a focus for HCI activities in the Central Ohio area
(2) provide networking opportunities for our members
(3) provide a mechanism for continuing education in HCI via talks and workshops
(4) to increase the awareness of HCI in the greater professional community

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Our primary problems/worries/concerns/questions:

(1) finding effective mechanisms for reaching folks doing HCI
    outside our traditional professional group
(2) keeping volunteers from wearing out
(3) involving new people in the running of the Chapter

What has worked particularly well:

* Getting good speakers and sites for meetings
* Setting up an infrastructure for the chapter on acm.org
* Finding ways to advertise (now finding effective ways...)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Rate our Local SIG (1-7, 1=low; 7=high): 5

We've been successful in presenting a good program,
but it has been very difficult to attract volunteers,
so the long term viability of the chapter is unclear.

Hi everyone,

We all meet together for the Local SIGs working meeting a week from today
on Monday, April 20 in the Santa Anita C room at the Westin Bonaventure
Hotel beginning at 9am. However, I'd like as many of us as possible to
also meet together for dinner the preceding (i.e., Sunday) evening so that
we can all get to know each other better before we dig into things on
Monday. Will you be able to attend such a dinner? Please let me know by
Wednesday, 15 April.

If the dinner reservations are made before I leave for LA, I'll send email
to you all as to where and when the dinner will be held (and whether we
will assemble to go to the location together). Regardless, I'll place a
notice on the message boards under L (for Local SIGs working meeting
attendees) with the same info.

I hope you can all attend.

Richard

This is from David Novick:

===========================================
Dear Colleague:

I encourage all CHI members who are interested in improving SIGCHI as an
international organization to join us at CHI 98 in Los Angeles on Tuesday,
April 21, 1998, from 14:00 to 15:30, for a special interest group meeting
on "The SIGCHI International Issues Committee: Taking Action."

This SIG's goal is to inform the CHI community about the creation of the
SIGCHI International Issues Committee (IIC), to encourage broad
participation in the committee's activities, and to develop an action plan
for the committee in carrying out the SIGCHI Executive Committee's
recommendations.

The SIG's 90 minutes will include three main activities: an update, a
panel discussion, and an open discussion on developing an action plan for
carrying out the IIC's charge. Panelists reporting and commenting on
international developments will include, in alphabetical order (hey, this
is in Los Angeles after all):

  * Richard Anderson, SIGCHI local chapters coordinator;
  * Guy Boy, SIGCHI executive vice-chair and leader of last year's
    SIGCHI International Issues Task Force;
  * Gilbert Cockton, conference planning chair and SIGCHI liaison
    for the British HCI Group;
  * John Karat, SIGCHI advisory board member for internationalization
and U.S. representative to IFIP TC 13; and
  * Marcin Sikorski, a leader of Poland's HCI community.

As a result of the SIG activities, we expect that the participants will
produce:

  * Wider awareness of the IIC and its role;
  * A draft action plan for the IIC; and
  * A roster of participants for IIC activities.

For more information, please visit the SIG's Web page at
http://www-eurisco.onecert.fr/events/intlsig98.html or send me e-mail.

Hoping to see you in LA,

--David

Fellow members of the CSTG, and other interested parties:
As is traditional, we will conduct a business meeting of the HFES CSTG
(Computer Systems Technical Group) at CHI next week. Plans are for a
meeting near lunch time on Wednesday, room to be determined. Look for
notices of the time and place while at the conference. Agenda topics
     will include:
     - administration of the new CSTG web site and list server,
     - report on submissions to the HFES'98 conference,
     - emerging vision of the NEW CSTG.

What would you add to this list? Any agenda topics sent to me by 3:00
p.m. CDT Friday, April 17th, will make it onto the docket.

If you are interested in the new enthusiasm surrounding a redefinition
     of the CSTG, or
If you have been ill-served by the HFES or CSTG in the past, or
If you are a creative sort who would like to share your talents for
the betterment of a society that wishes to serve the human factors
     practitioner/researcher/educator,
Then please join us and add your requirements to the new design.
     Thanks,
     Randolph Bias.

Dear CHIkids Parents,

One of the organizations supporting CHIkids and CHI98,
Hewlett-Packard, will have a number of scanners and printers set up in
the CHIkids area. These HP products are designed to scan and print
photographs. On Tuesday morning some of the kids will be able to
participate in an evaluation of these products as part of the CHIkids
Technology Workouts program, and they will be available for use by all
CHIkids participants at other times.

We encourage you to bring one or more personal photographs or other
items that your child (perhaps with your help) would like to scan,
edit, and print or duplicate, or even incorporate into a greeting card
or story using one of the available software applications.

Please do not bring a valuable or irreplaceable item to CHIkids. We
would hate to see a family heirloom disappear or be damaged
inadvertently.

Also, we'd like to encourage you to bring a small backpack or duffle
bag for your child to store his/her personal items and items created
during the week. It's usually a good idea to use a strip of masking tape
to label the backpack or duffle bag with your child's name on it.

Looking forward to meeting you in LA!

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder to look for (and to tell your colleagues and constituencies
to look for) an increased "presence" of CHI Local SIGs at CHI 98 next week.

Local SIG badge ribbons will be introduced this year (courtesy of BayCHI).
Ribbons specific to all chartered and prospective Local SIGs listed on the
SIGCHI Local SIGs webpage will be available. Instructions on where/when to
pick up the ribbons will be within the bag of materials each registrant
receives on arrival; tell your "members" to pick up their ribbons and
attach them to their CHI conference badges.

Local SIGs will be highlighted during the Wednesday morning break. Please
have representatives of your Local SIG present to answer questions, sign up
members, ... Indeed, tell your members to come by to meet, eat, and chat
in the area near the Local SIGs booth where special tables will be set up
for this 1-hour highlight.

The Local SIGs booth will be enhanced (again courtesy of BayCHI). Come by
to see what they have done to help advertise your Local SIG efforts, and
tell your "members" to use the Local SIGs booth as a convenient place at
which to meet friends.

You and your fellow Local SIG volunteers should attend the volunteers
reception to be held Wednesday evening after the SIGCHI Business meeting.
Food and drink will be on hand.

Leaders of most of the chartered and prospective Local SIGs will meet for a
full-day working meeting on Monday.

Listen for mention of Local SIGs following the closing plenary, during the
newcomers' orientation, during the SIGCHI Business meeting, during ...

And more.

Richard

Gary,

I'd love to have the opportunity to meet you and get to know you better
at CHI. I'll be flying in on Saturday, taking tutorials on Sunday and
Monday, and be there through the whole conference. I hope we can get
some time to get together. Quite a few other folks from Rockwell will
be there as well, and I know there is interest in meeting you as well.

If you want to plan something in advance, contact me at this e-mail
