Hello, Gary. I am the current Vice Chairman of the COCACM (Central Ohio
Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery). We are in a desperate
need of a speaker for our upcoming June membership meeting. I was referred
to you by John Boyd who says that you would be an excellent speaker for our
group on June 17. After viewing your web page, I have to say that I
strongly agree with John.

Could you please respond to me by email or phone if you are interested? If
so, I need a brief(2 to 3 paragraphs) biography and summary of what you
will be presenting for our monthly newsletter. If not, do you know of
someone who may be interested?

The meeting will be held at DaVinci's located at the corner of Henderson
and Reed Roads. A social hour begins at 5:30pm, dinner at 6:30pm and the
presentation will start around 7:30pm. As always, the speaker enjoys a
complimentary dinner on the chapter.

Thank you in advance for any help that you can give us.

Okay, how about this as a topic:

Deferring User Interface Design Decisions

In the development of a prototype for a
new version of FirstSearch, OCLC's Web-based
bibliographic and fulltext retrieval system,
I wanted to explore a variety of design ideas while
other developers were prototyping functions.
Based on previous experiences at Bell Labs
and Ohio State University, I created an generated
user interface architecture in which attributes of
screens (e.g., titles, icons, links, help) were
stored in a database used by HTML generators.
During the prototyping phase, developers modifed
generated files to get their functions working,
and their changes were worked back into the
page attributes and generators. At several
points during the process, the design of every
page in the system changed with no effect on
the other developers. For example, the positions
of every element on the screens changed and the
number of frames on the screens changed.
Developers were also shielded from having to make
graphic design choices, which are isolated in the screen
generators. This separation of content and format allowed
a version of the interface for Lynx users (single frame,
without graphics) to be generated in about an hour.
The talk will include some details of the tools
used and what worked well and what did not work well.

How does that sound?

Gary, this sounds very good. I will forward it on to our newsletter
editor. Also, what type of A/V equipment will you be using? Do you need
us to provide any?

Thanks again,
Pam

Clint, here is a bio:

Gary Perlman is a consulting research scientist at
the OCLC Online Computer Library Center. He designs, builds,
and evaluates user interfaces for bibliographic and full text
retrieval, notably for the OCLC FirstSearch service. Before OCLC,
he had research and/or teaching positions at Bell Labs,
Wang Institute, Software Engineering Institute, MIT, and OSU.
He has served in elected offices for ACM SIGCHI and BuckCHI,
for which he has created many Internet resources. See:
	http://www.acm.org/~perlman

I did not really mean that the paragraph below would be the abstract.
It would be okay, but I'd like to have a second stab at it.
It should be done by Thursday afternoon, if that's okay.

I've never been to a CO-CACM meeting, so I don't know the A/V options.
I could work with an overhead projector if that's all that's available.

Gary

Hi Gary,

Pam has been on vacation and your query (see below) seems to have fallen
through the cracks. For that we apologize. I will try to grab the ball and
run with it (to borrow a tired old cliche - watched a bit of a rugby match
on the tube this weekend).

The easy answer is that it all depends...on what you would like to do and
what we can do. On one end of the spectrum of possibilities, an overhaed
projector is easy. On the other end of the spectrum of possibilities, an
Internet connection is probably impossible. I suppose that as long as we
meet at area restaurants, that will be tough. We can probably provide a
mechanism to display the output of a computer. In the past we have used an
InFocus (or similar) projector with a computer or a video. We might be able
to provide a computer if we know what kind is desired.

We need to arrive at a conclusion of what is desired in advance since I have
to beg, borrow, ... whatever we want to use. Please let me know what you
would like to do.

Handouts would be great. Perhaps Pam has the count on the expected number of
attendees.

Clint, I was on vacation all last week. I just got back to work today.
Usually, Tony tries to get a LCD projector from Nationwide, but, due to
problems, we are unable to get one from here anymore and I did not get in
contact with our A/V department to see if we could at least use the
overhead projector.

Paul, could you get an overhead projector from your job? DaVinci's will
have a screen available for our use.

Thanks,
Pam

Folks: I received this question from Perlman a week ago and forwarded
it
to somebody (Pam, I think); but he has evidently not received an answer.
Could someone please decide what's going to be available and let Perlman
know?

Can I get some info on the A/V setup for my talk?
Will I have an overhead? Computer? Internet connection?
I have never been to a COCACM meeting, so any info
would be useful.

Shall I bring copies of handouts? How many?
