Welcome HFES-CSTG List Server Subscribers,

<Save this note!  Modified: 14 April 1998>

As a previous note indicated, you have been added to the
HFES-CSTG list server. This list server is provided by HFES and
the Computer Systems Technical Group to help you communicate with
other HFES CSTG members about issues affecting your technical
interests.

Messages distributed on this service are not official HFES
statements and they should not be considered as direct
communications with the HFES, its administrative agents, or its
central office staff.

To send a message to your fellow subscribers, simply address your
Internet e-mail message to:

                HFES-CSTG@listserv.vt.edu

(Do not reply to this id or otherwise send mail to this id
to control your subscription; this id is only for messages
that will be sent to all subscribers, more below.)

This is an "open" list server, meaning that the CSTG does not
control who can add themselves to the list. However, the list is
intended for use by members of the CSTG; non-members who sign
themselves up will removed from the list after a trial period.
(It only costs a few dollars to join CSTG, details available on
the CSTG Website, see P.S. below.)

Only list members can send and receive messages. This is NOT a
general purpose or "public" list server.

Your membership on the HFES-CSTG list server will be active as
long as you hold membership in the CSTG or until you inform the
CSTG that you no longer want to receive messages from the list
server (whichever comes first). The CSTG Webmaster, Jeff Kelley,
can help resolve problems with your use of the list. You can
remove yourself from this list server at any time by sending an
e-mail message to:

         listserv@listserv.vt.edu

with the 1-line text message stating:

         SIGNOFF HFES-CSTG

You can review a list of the current subscribers to HFES-CSTG
by sending the message:

         REVIEW HFES-CSTG

For general help on using this list service, use one of these:

         HELP <a few useful commands>
INFO REFCARD <a more complete list>

If you have questions or comments about the list, or if you
have problems using it (like, you just moved id's and can't
get yourself unsubscribed), send e-mail to the CSTG WebMaster,
Jeff Kelley at:

        jfkelley@us.ibm.com

P.S. The CSTG has it's own website. Since it might be moving
soon, the safest way to find it is to find the "Computer Systems"
link on webpage http://www.hfes.org/About/TG.html

Hi CSTGers,

I had accepted the job as list manager, and while there was no
traffic, I did not take much initiative, but now I've taken some.
I've changed the HFES-CSTG list options so that:

1. The list is now moderated, which means that I must approve
all posts. I will use this "power" mainly to intercept
subscription requests, redirect some mail, and suggest
that people reformat some messages that mailers mangle.
2. Replies to messages to the list will now go to the
sender, not the list, by default, thus avoiding the
most common capture error on the Internet.

The list is still open only to CSTG members (enforced by Jeff Kelley,
I think), and can only be reviewed by list subscribers.
So, I propose to make the list public to promote its presence.
As moderator, I can block all spam, and with private review of the
list, your email addresses are relatively safe from getting onto
direct email lists. Comments are welcome, but negative are always
interpreted by me as a request to volunteer for the job. :-))

As you may know, there are many (3384) entries from HFES conferences
in the HCI Bibliography:
        http://www.hcibib.org
But in recent years, it became harder and harder to get validators
for HFES proceedings, and not one person has commented that 1995
was the last year covered in the database. See:
        http://www.hcibib.org/confer.html
Perhaps people don't know that the resource is there,
people do not find it useful, or the data are not of interest.
The HCIBIB search server is handing 7000 searches a month,
so there is something there of interest to some people.
My feeling is that being out of the database puts the HFES
in general and the CSTG in particular at a disadvantage.

I'd be happy to entertain ideas about what to do about this.

Me again.

CHI 99 will happen May 15-20 in Pittsburgh.
Will there be a CSTG SIG session or any CSTG activity?
Last year, HFES did not even show up to the conference,
despite it being in Los Angeles. It was unintentional,
due to a lot of miscommunication, but worth getting
right this time.

Gary

Randolph,
I just put a draft of our CSTG Brochure on the website, along with some
suggested changes, as outlined in the archives appended below. I asked
CSTG members to send suggestions to you and to me. You may wish to take
this up for your next Chair's Corner column for the Bulletin. (hint, hint
;-)

* * * My previous soapbox on the subject * * *

This old chestnut is going out shortly with the Call for Papers to describe
the interestes and Raison d'etre of CSTG. We need a new one (and we need
to resurrect our effort to re-position our mission statement for the CSTG
brochure and website!)

The COMPUTER SYSTEMS group is concerned with the human factors aspects of
(1) interactive computer systems, especially user interface design issues;
(2) the data-processing environment, including personnel selection,
training, and procedures; and (3) software development.

Considering how the TG's interests have morphed in the last 20 years, this
might as well say:

The COMPUTER SYSTEMS group is concerned with the human factors aspects
of modern computing machine installations, including the ergonomics of
handling large trays of punch cards; safety aspects of high-speed tape
drives; readability of chain-printer output; impact of introduction of
cathode ray tubes on console operations; skills transfer between slide
rule operation and mechanical calculator operations, computer-generated
mail: automated printing and postage; selection and training for mainframe
operators; wardrobe implications of the eagerly anticipated future
introduction of female operators into computer center operations
(especially impact on white lab-coat design and the problem of pocket
protectors in future clothing designs that may have no pockets).

The COMPUTER SYSTEMS TECHNICAL GROUP (CSTG) of the Human Factors and
Ergonomics Society is concerned with human factors in the design of
computer systems. This includes the user-centered design of hardware,
software, documentation, work activities, and the work environment.
Working within the broader context of the other wide-ranging sub-
specialties within HFES, practicioners and researchers in the CSTG
community take a holistic, systems approach to the design and evaluation
of all aspects of user-computer interactions. The short-term goal is to
ensure that computer systems are useful, usable, and safe. The
overriding motivation is to enhance the quality of work life by ensuring
that computer interface, function and job design are interesting and
provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

NOTE: I have updated this proposal somewhat on the website based on
Elizabeth's concerns...

Wisely indeed.

He then changes

Although I agree at heart -- what he describes as the "overriding
motivation" is, in fact, why I quit programming and got into this
field -- I'm not sure that I want to state it so baldly in a
professional milieu. I'm afraid other engineers (esp. system
engineers) could get the impression that we don't care about their
issues such as cost and overall system performance. Also, I would
imagine that there are some (many?) CSTG members for whom it is not
the overriding motivation.

I suggest instead that we state these simply as two main goals and not
place either ahead of the other in priority.

Elizabeth

>>>other CSTG-L comment from kelley...

The second paragraph of TECHNICAL FOCUS is also badly out of date;
I dont' have time at the moment to suggest anything better, however.
(It looks like something right out of the 70's!)

Regarding the Success Stories section of the CSTG brochure: I might
humbly suggest that we replace the mention of the Olympic Messaging
System that was created by my group in 1982 with a mention of the well-
known Expo '92 Guest Information System we installed at the World's Fair
in Seville Spain. This multimedia, transactional system, used by 15
million people during the course of the Fair, demonstrated the efficacy
of user-centered, iterative design and Research in the Marketplace. Let
me attempt a draft of a paragraph about it (I will send to Gary a
revision)...

The ITS group at IBM's T.J. Watson Research Center developed a new,
user-centered, iterative, multidisciplinary, tools-based approach to
application development. As part of making their tools better, they
have used them to develop challenging applications. One much-publicized
example was an integrated set of multimedia applications developed for
the EXPO '92 World's Fair in Seville, Spain and used by 10-15 million
visitors. This application allowed the visitors to "finger-walk" the
site, make restaurant reservations, exchange multimedia messages, read
the daily news, make fingerpaintings, have their opinions surveyed, and
more. The system, distributed throughout the site, was a high-speed
network of 231 multimedia public access kiosks. The system comprised
high-resolution touchscreen displays, thousands of images showing aerial
photos and pictures of pavilions, over 100 multimedia country stories,
video cameras, audio input and output, and badge and ticket readers.
The high usage, popularity, and 99% availabilty of the application
are testaments to sound design practices that are based on early and
continuing focus on users (both end-users and operations personnel)
in the design and delivery process. The developers of the Expo '92
application won the HFES Alexander C. Williams Jr. Award for outstanding
contributions of human factors principles to the design of a major
operational system in 1996.

P.S. one item I neglected to get to: the outdated CSTG mission statement.
Randolph Bias brought this up a full two years ago. In a recent phone
conversaton last week, Randolph boldly signed up to look through my
various notes and cstg-l discussions on the subject and draft a
proposal. Randolph, if you would send us all a copy and if everyone
would comment, I will submit the draft as an addendum to the minutes. I
would also like to include it as a votable in the ballot, which I hope
to do next week. If you'd like to see the file on it, let me or
Randolph know and one of us will send it to you (or I may just send it

CSTG Friends,
I have switched to Quark Express from MS Word, which should allow us a much
better looking product from our printing/mailing house. There is a
stub/sample available via http://cstg.watson.ibm.com/nl99_26_1.pdf. It
looks pretty much like the last one, but maybe a little slicker; I just
spent two days learning Quark and working up a document template.

I Need:

Chair's column (I would recommend maybe taking up the issue of the new
mission statement and proposed changes in the brochure (available on the
website).

Feature Column: I could use help from any/all of you. I would like to
invite some mover/shaker/notable to write some (possibly controversial)
column for the next newsletter. I already asked Jakob Nielsen, but he's
too busy. Do you know anyone you could ask?

Ph.D. Abstracts: please ask your academic colleagues to hunt around in
their desk drawer for last year's abstracts.

Rogues: I need juicy tidbits about People. (Also, if you're not on our
Rogue's Gallery online listing yet, please submit an entry on the website)

Do our present and/or future Program Chairs have anything to share?

Book Reviews: Georgia?

Randolph: if you write a column about CSTG for ITG, they will return the
favor.

Please Help. I need to keep the momentum going on this to keep CSTG
healthy/happy.
Jeff

All HFES CSTG members are invited to contribute book reviews to the HFES
CSTG Bulletin. Each selected reviewer is provided with a free copy of the
reviewed title in return for submission of the completed review.

If there is a specific book that you would like to review, let me know the
title and author; also, if you feel that its relevance to the CSTG may not
be obvious to me, briefly state its connection. If you do not already have
a copy of the book, I will arrange for the HFES Central Office to reimburse
you for its purchase; in this case, you must send me an original receipt
first, though. Usually, it is requested that reviewers prepare and return a
review within a month of receiving reimbursement for a given book.

Most reviews are four to six printed pages, assuming 10-point font,
double-spacing between lines, and one-inch margins on all sides. (Note that
this is merely to give you an idea of typical length. You definitely do not
need to double-space -- or even print out -- your review; in fact, I expect
you to e-mail it to me. If for some reason you should become unable to
e-mail me your review, then please surface mail a diskette containing the
review in electronic form.)

Review content is at the discretion and judgment of the individual reviewer.
Generally, most reviewers give an overall summary of the purpose, audience,
and content (i.e., major chapters) and then evaluatively assess the
usefulness, timeliness, etc., of the material presented. Some reviewers
also choose to incorporate brief quotations from the work and/or to provide
greater analysis of selected sections or chapters of the work.

As editor, I hope that you will decide to be a book reviewer, and I look
forward to hearing from you!

It's just about finished. http://cstg.watson.ibm.com/nl99_26_1.pdf

Bill/Randolph, in your respective roles as Chair and Production Editor can you
do a thorough look-thru?

Georgia, please look over your books column.

This is the "March" issue. I'd like to get this shipped early next week if
possible.

If you have quark express, substitute qxd for pdf above and you can download the
source doc (sans large graphic imbed files).
