Dear soccer players and parents,

Many of you already know me, however for the ones who do not, my name is =
Christian Stock. I will be your soccer coach this year, and I look =
forward to a fun and exciting season. My most important goals are to =
make sure that each player enjoys this experience and learns/masters =
some of the fundamentals of soccer.

For the third-graders, some key differences we will see this year are =
the length of games (48 minutes), the involvement of a goalkeeper (I =
would like a couple of volunteers), a few new rules (throw-in and =
offside) and the fact that both grades will play on one single team of =
10 players.

We will practice for one hour on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and on =
Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. at the south end of Lane Road Park. Please send =
the boys to practice with a water bottle, even if the weather is cold. =
Each child should wear shin-guards and cleats, although the league does =
not require this equipment. Mouth-guards may be worn, but they are not =
required.

Later this week, we will circulate a volunteer list for snacks and =
drinks after the games. Some of you have already signed up, but there =
are a few dates remaining. Please let me know. I would also like for =
you and your son to discuss a possible name for the team. Here are a =
few ideas: The Ravens, The Blackbirds, The Nighthawks, and The =
Hurricanes.

See you at the next practice.

Christian Stock

Hi, Gary,

Thanks so much for the comments and the links.

I absolutely agree that it would be good to have two or three drills (groups
of eight or five boys) going on at the same time as this will definitely
help in keeping their attention and developing various skills. However, I
am not in favor of smaller groups for multiple reasons. I feel that at this
age, it is important to keep things simple and consistent, as well as to
continue reinforcing basic skills and positions. As the boys' skill level
increases, new and more complicated drills can be added. I also think that
it is important to have consistency with respect to the parents who help
during practice and the games. In short, it is much easier to have two
parents commit to being present for each practice than to have five.

Peter Kleinhenz has already volunteered to help out, and I'd like to know if
I can enlist your help as well. Let me know.
Thanks,
Christian

Hi Gary,

It's been quite a while since we've talked or emailed or whatever. You =
came to mind as I was looking on-line for resources for a class I'm =
proposing to teach this spring at WPI. I'm an adjunct there now, but =
hope to be full time next year. (Professor of practice -- full-time, =
non-tenured) Anyway, I want to teach a course on experiments in software =
engineering. I plan on having the students learn how to design and run =
experiments on things like the effectiveness of different development =
practices (like the eXtreme Programming practices and others). I was =
wondering if you had any pointers to material, or know of a textbook =
that might be appropriate for a graduate-level course.

I found your home page and remembered that you were doing a lot in the =
statistics area. Hopefully you've got something useful. The page for the =
course I'm teaching (Software Testing) is at =
http://www.cs.wpi.edu/~gpollice/cs525t-f02/.

Hope all is well with you and thanks in advance,
    --Gary
